1. What are the most suitable or effective strategies to build students' confidence at the moment of developing their receptive skills?

What are receptive skills? Receptive skills are called receptive because with them we receive information and process it to understand it, receptive skills can help you understand stuff when you hear it or read it. These skills are substantial for us because they unlock the meaning behind what you can perceive and they are super important for communication and learning, even more so if we are learning a foreign language, they are our way to get input.

Developing Receptive Skills: Listening and reading can be difficult at first, the key is exposure, whether it's through fun stuff like TV or music, or more structured learning with textbooks. Just make sure the material isn't too easy or too hard for the students level, and that it's something your students can relate to, it makes things less confusing and more enjoyable for them.

These are some of the most suitable or effective strategies for inspiring confidence in receptive skills that I found:

Support Everyone

In classes where students have different abilities it is important to make sure they don't feel lost. You can help them with this by using simple strategies, like giving hints for missing words, you could also give students who struggle a script to check understanding.

Get Ready to Listen and Understand

Have a conversation with your class about the topic you are going to talk about. This not only will get your students speaking and giving opinions but also helps them think about what they might hear. On the other hand it is a great opportunity to teach them some useful vocabulary in a natural way.

Be Patient and Predict

Encourage your students to take their time with the task and discuss what they think might come up with between them, you could make groups. Even if their guesses aren't correct all the time, the important thing is that they are getting ready to listen and learn.

Tips that can help you built confidence in reading:

- Let your students choose what they want to read, it will make them more interested.
- Don't force them to read out loud if they are not comfortable yet.
- Play word games to improve their skills.
- Let them read to someone who will not judge them, like a friend.
- Praise them to boost their confidence.
- It's okay for them to read easier books sometimes or those that have pictures.
- Don't focus on the small mistakes focus on building confidence first then give feedback.
- Show them that struggling with words is normal and a part of learning for everyone.

2. How can practicing specific reading skills, like scanning or skimming, help learners comprehend readings better?

What is scanning? Scanning is a technique for reading that helps you find specific information without reading everything like we usually do. To scan you need to understand the structure of the material so you can point out the information that's essential. When you're in a hurry you have to move your eyes side by side over the text to locate keywords, phrases, or relevant details that help you get the main ideas. When you search for particular answers or facts in a long text know this is a useful skill.

What is skimming? Skimming allows you to do more reading in less time. It involves focusing on the main themes, subjects, concepts, etc, particularly this is used for texts like non-fiction. Skimming is about pinpointing what's relevant to you. While some people or teachers might see skimming as a random eye movement exercise, effective skimming actually requires a structured approach where you selectively engage with the text, skipping over non-essential parts.

How can practicing these skills help learners comprehend readings better?

If your students are already familiar with skimming and scanning techniques, that is wonderful, I was too, during high school, but I am not really fond of them now, remember, your students can learn about them almost anywhere and you can clarify doubts. Both techniques are essential for understanding long and complex texts and they not only introduce alternative reading methods to students but also enhance cognitive processing and literacy skills as Kaitlyn states. Encourage your students to use these strategies and emphasize their value in navigating extensive readings.

Thanks for reading.

  7. Assessment 3-productive skills
Amy, It was easy to follow the information you found. Regarding question 1, In my opinion most of the strategies and techniques you mention are tips that you would give to your students. But how about the work you would do in the classroom to contribute to the development of the speaking skills in your courses?
As for question 2. Here are some questions: How can teachers monitor and keep track of students´ progress? We know what self-evaluation is, but again How can we make it work successfully? I don´t see how the information about Oral presentations is relevant for your question. Please think about it.
